Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnosis to work with you?
No, not at all. I am a life coach that has focused on ADHD to better serve that population, and many of the skills I learned to be an ADHD coach translate well to people that don’t experience ADHD symptoms on a daily basis.
What you do need is a desire to work toward your goals. We can address issues with focus, develop concrete actions and create motivation, incentives and rewards (tangible or not) that work for you to get your project or goal off the ground.
What can I expect with coaching?
Coaching involves a three month commitment. We first meet and do an intake meeting where we will get to know each other and talk about your desires with coaching. This meeting will take 90 minutes for an adult. With a younger client, it will also include a meeting with a parent and possibly a teacher.
We will talk once per week for 20-30 minutes. During that session you will talk about your goal for coaching that day. These sessions will be via Zoom. If you live in Northeast Iowa, you can also visit me at my office in downtown Decorah (March 2020 update – all sessions will be via Zoom until it is safe to gather again)
In between our sessions, we will text each other to check in. We will also set up accountability systems and work with planners and calendars as needed.
What is the difference between ADD, ADHD and executive function dysfunction/ challenges?
(Both definitions are taken from ADDitude Magazine)
“ADHD is the official, medical term for the condition — regardless of whether a patient demonstrates symptoms of hyperactivity. ADD is a now-outdated term that is typically used to describe inattentive-type ADHD, which has symptoms including disorganization, lack of focus, and forgetfulness. People with inattentive ADHD are not hyper or impulsive.”
“Executive dysfunction is a term used to describe the range of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional difficulties which often occur as a result of another disorder or a traumatic brain injury. Individuals with executive dysfunction struggle with planning, problem-solving, organization, and time management.”
